How I Found out I was Pregnant

I thought I would share with you my story of finding out I was pregnant.  Hubby and I have been together for over 11 years and married almost 4 years.  We both acquired school debt while in university and decided it would be best to pay off our debt before having kids.  We had a very aggressive plan and it was only going to take about 3 years to get it all paid off!  We were pumped.  Then a surprise happened…

So, I had been having mild period-like cramps all week, which is highly unusual for me.  I usually have them for two days: the day before I get my period and day one of my period.  The fact that I had cramps for a week and no period was confusing to me.  I was just waiting for my period to come.  Then, I had a bit of a realization: I was 10 days late.  This wasn’t a huge concern for me, as I have been irregular in the past; I even missed a period entirely one month several years ago.

It was a Saturday that I decided to take the test.  I was 10 days late, I was having these strange cramps with no sign of a period, and I had plans to go out drinking that night.  I thought I had better play it safe and take a test JUST IN CASE so my mind would be at ease while sipping on beer later that night.

This was not a new experience for me and hubby.  We had scares in the past (such as the time I skipped a period).  So, this time was no different.  We went in a bit worried.  We talked about the possibility and how crazy it would be, etc., etc.  We never actually thought it would be positive.  So, I did my thing with the pee and the stick and we waited the appropriate amount of time.  Then, we went to check the stick.

And we saw two. pink. lines.  Two lines!  That means positive!  That means pregnant!

Aaand we were in denial.  We started googling false positives for at-home pregnancy tests like crazy people.  We discovered that false positives are actually very rare; it’s false negatives that are more common.  But there were factors that could RARELY cause a false positive.  One factor being waiting too long to check the results.  Okay, so we may have gotten a bit distracted while waiting (ahem – doing what caused the result to happen in the first place – tmi?).  So.  Maybe that’s what happened?  Another factor could have been the cup I used to dip the stick into.  If it had any soap residue on it, this too could RARELY cause a false positive.  Okay.  We have a chance that this is a false positive.

So, we tested again with a second stick.  We made sure the cup was as clean and soap-residue-free as possible.  And we timed the exact minutes we were required to wait.  We returned to the bathroom thinking maybe, just maybe, it would only be one line.

NOPE!  Two freaking lines.  Again.

Oh God.

This is actually happening.

There’s no way it could be false twice.

Tears.  Literally.  I cried.  It was more from fear than anything, really.  I was TERRIFIED.  It’s funny actually, because when we were talking earlier that day about the possibility, hubby was the one freaking out and I was calm.  Then, when we actually find out, I freak out and he stays calm.  Ha!  Funny how things work, isn’t it?

So.  That’s my story of how I found out I was going to be a mom!  I’m still scared, but also very excited and so is hubby.  🙂

  1. Wow! I can imagine that an unplanned pregnancy would really throw you for a loop. My hubby and I had a few scares before we were trying to get pregnant too, so I remember that feeling. I think it’s funny that you and your husband switched roles when it came to being calm vs. worried. I’m sure you’re going to love motherhood – but I definitely remember those days of being terrified! 🙂

Haha – yes, it was quite funny how we switched roles in our reactions! I’m sure I will love motherhood too. Can’t wait to meet this little one! 🙂
