Seriously…I’m Kidding by Ellen DeGeneres

My Copy: Audiobook

Ellen Degeneres’ winning, upbeat candor has made her show one of the most popular, resilient and honored daytime shows on the air, and her life makes for great (and very funny) reading.

“I’ve experienced a whole lot the last few years and I have a lot to share. So I hope that you’ll take a moment to sit back, relax and enjoy the words I’ve put together for you in this book. I think you’ll find I’ve left no stone unturned, no door unopened, no window unbroken, no rug unvacuumed, no ivories untickled. What I’m saying is, let us begin, shall we?”

Seriously… I’m Kidding is a lively, hilarious, and often sweetly poignant look at the life of the much-loved entertainer as she opens up about her personal life, her talk show, and joining the judges table of American Idol.

My Review

I enjoyed this book, but not as much as I expected to. I thought that it was going to be a bit more real and just more about her life than it actually was. The synopsis makes it sound like Ellen humorously talks about her life, which is somewhat true, but there is also a whole bunch of randomness throughout the book. I would say more random things than real things. This disappointed me. While I do enjoy hey comedic nature, I also wanted to hear about something real (while getting in some chuckles).

I did have some laugh-out-loud moments, as Ellen can be pretty hilarious. I just wished for more from this book. I super love that Ellen narrated this audiobook herself. Is that common for celebrities to do? Honestly, I don’t think it would have the same effect of it was a different narrator. All books should be narrated by their authors! How awesome would that be??

I enjoyed the fact that Ellen added special things into the book that were specifically for the audiobook listeners, just as there are special things for the readers of the print book. I think that’s a fun twist and not commonly done (as far as I know).

All in all, I would recommend this book to fans of Ellen – just be prepared that it’s majority is random comedy with some real stuff mixed in.

  1. Oh this does sound fun! I love watching her do interviews on youtube although I haven’t really seen a full show of hers.😂 She’s SO funny and quick?! Sadness the book didn’t quite meet expectations though. 😔
