I’ve been trying really hard to eat healthy (and just to live a healthier lifestyle) for years now.  I’ve always struggled for many reasons:

  • I hate cooking
  • I hate grocery shopping
  • I love convenience
  • I’ve always found healthy food to be bland and boring
  • I crave junk food

However, a couple of weeks ago I tried something new, something that some call crazy and some love the idea of.  Since then, I barely struggle to stay on track!

The Plan

I heard about this plan where you cook a whole bunch of slow cooker meals all in one day and then freeze the meals so that you don’t have to cook everyday.  As soon as I heard about this amazing idea, I knew I had to try it!

So, my husband and I sat down and started gathering recipes.  We decided to try prepping enough meals for two weeks.  Once we had noted all the ingredients we needed, we headed to the grocery store (where we shopped for two hours).  Then, we spent the rest of the day prepping!

The process ended up taking us about seven hours.  But at the end of the day, we had two weeks’ worth of slow cooker meals, all in separate freezer bags, in the freezer and ready to just be plopped into the slow cooker each morning for the next two weeks!

Why this plan works so well for me

Well, honestly, it tackles everything on that list I made above.

I no longer need to cook everyday.  I can just cook one (very long) day every two weeks.  The one day is pretty awful (for me, who hates to cook), but the result is absolutely amazing!  Every other day for the rest of the two-week span is great!

I only need to go grocery shopping once every two weeks.  Granted, it is a fairly long grocery trip, but it gets faster the more we go.  The more herbs and spices we buy and stock up on, the less we have to buy the next time.  We are also learning where certain ingredients are that we had to search for the first time around.

This plan is very convenient.  In the morning, all I have to do is plop a bag into the slow cooker, turn it on, carry on with the rest of my day, and supper is ready when I get home from work!  Talk about convenience!  I no longer have the urge to just grab something (usually fast food) on the way home from work because I just don’t feel like cooking.  Supper is already cooking at home!

I no longer view eating healthy as bland or boring.  I have found some really great recipes (which I plan on sharing as soon as I figure out what the copyright issues are about these types of things, as I don’t want to step on anybody’s toes – I will find out soon and begin sharing!) online and in cookbooks that are anything but bland.  In fact, I have found some of my favourite meals and they are 100% guilt-free and healthy!  I’m so pumped about this!

I don’t crave junk food as much as I used to.  I have found some great healthy snack recipes and I still have lots to try.  Plus, with fact that so many of these meals are delicious, who needs junk food when you have delicious healthy options?  I also love the variety I’m getting with this plan.  I don’t crave eating out and such things like I used to because I now have such a variety of meals, instead of merely switching between a few different meals like I used to do.

I highly recommend this (or a similar) plan

I really do.

The one day of grocery shopping/preparation is tough and long, but the rest of the two weeks is amazing!

There are so many resources to get healthy and free recipes right now.  My favourite sites to follow (and they are always posting new recipes) are Skinny Taste, The Skinny Fork, and Sugar Free Mom.  Check them out!

Share your story: Do you struggle to eat healthy?  What do you find to be the hardest aspect to deal with?  Have you ever tried a plan like this?  What types of tips do you have for those who want to live a healthier lifestyle? Feel free to ask me anything about the plan above.

Excellent! Love this idea! I briefly considered trying this myself after reading someone else’s blog wherein they were also very excited about it but I never did get around to doing it. Once you get some recipes up on here, I think I just might finally give this a try! 🙂
