August 2018 BoxyCharm

24 August, 2018 / 8 Comments

I subscribe to a monthly beauty box called BoxyCharm and decided it would be fun to share what’s in the box and talk about my thoughts on the products!  I love these boxes because you get so much value for so little money!  The box is $21.00 USD per month and in this August box, I got $108.00 worth of product!  How amazing is that??  Okay, let’s get started…

Laura Lee Los Angeles Party Animal Eyeshadow Palette

Description provided in the box: Dare to be the life of the party with Laura Lee Los Angeles Party Animal Palette.  These six stunning shades create bold, colorful looks leaving you ready for a night of fun!
Retail Price: $19 USD | #LAURALEEPARTY

My thoughts: I’ve been making an effort to wear more natural shades of eyeshadow, since I’m not getting any younger!  I’m just starting to feel like the colours I like to play with so much are becoming less wearable for me, unfortunately.  So, for that reason, I’m a bit disappointed in this palette.  There are no wearable colours.  They are all bright, fun colours.  Don’t get me wrong – they are pretty!  But I just can’t see myself using this palette very often.  I did test it out a bit, though, and the shadows seemed good.  They blended well.

House of Lashes Lashes

Description provided in the box: Add length and dimension to your makeup look with your new favorite lashes.  Cruelty-free, high quality and long lasting, these lashes provide up to 15 wears and will be the talk of every party!

My thoughts: Because of my eye shape, I know these lashes aren’t for me.  They are so long and they would just look ridiculous on me.  Unfortunately, I have to be careful with the lashes I wear without looking silly.  Maybe I could try these on Halloween, but that would be the only time these would be acceptable for me.  Someone with bigger eyes/bigger eyelids would be able to use these, but that’s not me!

Smashbox Assorted Lip Products

Description provided in the box: Create bold, beautiful looks with your new Smashbox lip product.  This pigment-loaded color glides on in just one swipe, getting you out the door and into the party quicker!
Retail Price: $21-24 | #SMASHBOXPARTY

My thoughts: It’s true that this lipstick has great pigment.  The colour I received, however, just isn’t for me.  I’m not too sure how it’s supposed to be correctly used, as it’s 3 stripes of different colours.  What I did was applied it and then smudged the colours together.  I’m not sure if that’s what you’re supposed to do, but it looked silly otherwise, in my opinion.  The result was a bright purple colour, which I don’t care for in a lip product.  However, once I wiped it off, I was left with this subtle pinkish stain, which I liked.  I’ve actually used it a couple times just like that – apply, smudge, remove (with just a tissue – not makeup remover), good to go!

Wander Baggage Claim Gold Eye Masks

Description provided in the box: After a night of partying, who doesn’t love a good eye mask?  These gold foil undereye masks brighten, hydrate and reduce the appearance of dark circles.  The hyaluronic acid diminishes the appearance of wrinkles, while aloe leaf extracts lavender oil cool and soothe your undereye area.
Retail Price: $13 USD | #WANDERPARTY

My thoughts: I’ve used two of the three provided eye masks and they seem good.  Nothing seems to be able to get rid of my dark circles – I’m just doomed that way.  But my eyes felt nice and hydrated after.

Bang Beauty Chocolate Eyeliner

Description provided in the box: Use it as an eyeliner, eyeshadow base, or even to touch-up your brows, this creamy, chocolate toned pomade is the ultimate triple threat.
Retail Price: $22 USD | #BANGBEAUTYPARTY

My thoughts: I tried this as an eyeliner and it did not apply well at all.  It didn’t feel creamy; it felt kind of chunky.  It took several tries and going over with more and more product to get it to show up on my eyes and even then it didn’t look great.  I didn’t care for this product.  I honestly don’t even want to try it on my brows.

Adesse Sweet Almond Cuticle Oil

Description provided in the box: Treat yourself, your nails and your cuticles after a night out.  This lightweight, non-greasy oil is formulated with vitamin E, shea, sweet almond and jojoba oils that are blended together to create a luxurious treatment that softens the cuticles, to create a luxurious treatment that softens the cuticles, moisturizes and hydrates the nails.
Retail Price: $18 USD | #ADESSEPARTY

My thoughts: This cuticle oil is pretty much like every other cuticle oil I’ve tried.  I guess I’m not very picky when it comes to cuticle oils.  It does the job, so I guess that’s all that matters to me!

  1. This is why I don’t like boxes, unfortunately. (Even book boxes, but it seems like it would be worse with beauty boxes). Sure you only spent $21 for $108 worth of products, but if you really don’t like any of them, it’s still $21 pretty much wasted. I like to buy Bare Escentuals makeup, and once or twice I’ve bought their “grab bag” type boxes—which are offered at a huge discount—but I’ve learned that it’s not worth it for me because I’m often not interested in at least half of what they send me. Seems like a waste.

Which isn’t to say you shouldn’t enjoy your boxes, of course. For some people the fun of the surprise makes up for any products they don’t love. 🙂

I totally get that! This is actually the first BoxyCharm box that I’ve been disappointed in. I get sooo excited when it shows up and then I am usually happy with what’s inside.

  2. I’m sorry more of the items in this box didn’t meet your standards, but I totally get it. You take a risk and make a gamble when you participate in a box like this! Have you had other, more positive experiences with other BoxyCharm boxes?

Oh, for sure. This is actually the first box I’ve received that I’ve been disappointed in. You can check out my other BoxyCharm reviews here (and I’ve actually been subscribed for longer than that, but I just recently started incorporating them into my blog).
