Night of Cake & Puppets (Daughter of Smoke & Bone #2.5) by Laini Taylor

My Copy: ePub eBook
Publication Date: November 26, 2013
Publisher: Little, Brown Books
Source: Purchased
Genre: Fantasy | Romance | Young Adult

In “Night of Cake & Puppets”, Taylor brings to life a night only hinted at in the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy—the magical first date of fan-favorites Zuzana and Mik. Told in alternating perspectives, it’s the perfect love story for fans of the series and new readers alike. Petite though she may be, Zuzana is not known for timidity. Her best friend, Karou, calls her “rabid fairy,” her “voodoo eyes” are said to freeze blood, and even her older brother fears her wrath. But when it comes to the simple matter of talking to Mik, or “Violin Boy,” her courage deserts her. Now, enough is enough. Zuzana is determined to meet him, and she has a fistful of magic and a plan. It’s a wonderfully elaborate treasure hunt of a plan that will take Mik all over Prague on a cold winter’s night before finally leading him to the treasure: herself! Violin Boy’s not going to know what hit him.

My Review

Oh, how I missed Laini Taylor’s writing!  I truly am in love with her writing style.  It’s so creative and unique and beautiful.  I didn’t realize how much I missed it before I picked up this little story.  I cannot wait for Dreams of Gods & Monsters!

I thought “Night of Cake & Puppets” was so good.  A great addition to the series for sure!  This story is cute and romantic and creative and imaginative and unique and beautiful.

I love Zuzanna as a character.  And this story made me love her even more.  What a creative, romantic, and magical first date she had!  I love Zuzanna and I loved this story.  For someone who doesn’t have any romantic history, she sure has one hell of a romantic first date!

I also think it’s worth mentioning that the alternating POVs were done very well.  Both Zuzanna and Mik had completely unique and distinct voices.  There was no confusion at all.  It seems that Taylor is good at everything!

A Peek Inside

He’s a man, but he’s got, like, cartoon princess skin. Don’t ever tell him I said that, even though I mean it in the best possible way. He’s got the manliest cartoon princess skin.
