Full Posts or Summaries?

25 May, 2018 / 14 Comments

On a blogger’s homepage, there are one of two things happening.  Either it shows a list of full posts, or a list of summaries with a “read more” (or similar) option.  I obviously use the latter in my blog.

Which one?

I’m always surprised when I visit a blog that does the full posts option, as I prefer the summary option.  Obviously, there is no right or wrong option – everyone does things differently and what works for someone might not work for someone else and vice versa.

Clearly, I prefer doing just the summaries.  I can see the appeal for the full posts option, though.  A reader might be scrolling through and skimming the content and actually read a post that they might have passed up if they only saw the title and excerpt.

However, I think summaries are the way to go and that’s why I use this option on my blog.  I think the homepage looks nice and clean with an image and a small excerpt of what the post is and then the reader can click on the link to read the whole post if they so choose.  I like this option because I find it is easier to find a post that interests the reader, as they can just quickly scroll through the posts.  I actually get a bit annoyed when I visit a blog that does the full posts because I’m looking for a post that interests me, but I have to scroll waaaayyy down through all the full posts that I’m maybe not interested in reading, when I would prefer to just get a quick look at all the recent posts in order to find one I want to read.  Please don’t be offended if you do the full posts, as this is merely my personal preference (and it’s not going to deter me from visiting your blog).

Share your story: Which option do you prefer and why?  I’d love to know your thoughts, especially if you prefer the full posts option!

  1. I prefer the summaries too! I don;t even post summaries on my homepage just the image and title. You have to hover over the image to see a one sentence summary so go figure LOL Great post!

Oh! I should have added just image and title as an option too – that’s right. I like that option too. Very similar to summaries!

  2. I prefer the full posts option, actually. I like to skim through the first couple posts when I visit a bog to see what’s interesting/if I want to keep reading the blog. If I see a page with “read more” options I almost never click to “read more.” However, if the post were a full one, I might actually read it and be interested enough to comment.

And yet you’re commenting on one of my posts! Haha! That’s very interesting, though. I can definitely see your point. Thanks for sharing your opinion 🙂

  3. I prefer to see as many posts as I can in as little time as possible. Because with summaries I can easily get a feel of type of blog this is. Does it have a lot of discussions? More reviews? The kind of books they review… I’m lazy so I don’t like to do a ton of scrolling on the homepage XD

  4. I actually don’t have a preference when I visit other blogs, but I like to show the full posts on my blog! I always let the readers know if it might contain information that would spoil a previous book in a series, or I hide spoilers away so they have to be highlighted in order to be read. I do use the “read more” when it’s a blog tour post, but only because those can get pretty long. I usually have my review showing, and the read more will take you to additional information (excerpt, giveaway, etc.)

    Lovely thoughts! <3

No preference at all? Haha – well, that’s okay I suppose! So, why did you decide to do full posts on your blog? That’s great that you either include whether there are spoilers or hide them. I never thought of that when coming up with my reasons for summaries!

  5. OH this is such an interesting post! I’m with you here, I prefer summaries as well. I saw that Pam @ Reverie Society said above that she likes to get a feel of the blog with that and it’s exactly how I feel as well. I love that everything is neat and simple to scroll down, not endless, and that we can see different types of blog posts thay way. Makes it easy to find blog posts that interest us, too 😀

  6. I used to do full posts but then I realised it was slowing down my site. I have excerpts now and I think it’s much more reader-friendly.

  7. Well, what a cool discussion! I prefer summaries for a couple of reasons, the biggest being that I can scroll through faster to get to what I want and then I can click to read more. You can’t comment on a summary, it’s harder to scroll through and I definitely don’t read a full post on a home page anyways! But that’s just me and my reading style.
