Kiss Collector by Wendy Higgins
When seventeen-year-old Zae Monroe gets cheated on by the only guy she’s ever loved, then watches her parents’ marriage crumble, she decides to forget about relationships and turn the tables on the boys of the world. It’s time to take what she wants, and what she wants are kisses. Athletes, musicians, poets, and bad boys—their lips are all on her agenda, and it’s time to collect.
Zae proposes a contest with her friends to see who can kiss the most boys during spring break. But what starts as a harmless competition leads to a downward spiral she can’t seem to break free of. As family, academic, friend, and guy drama come to a head, Zae is forced to face the reasons behind her boy angst, and starts to wonder if she was wrong about the male race…or at least some of them.
If you read my Five Reasons Why You Should Pre-order Kiss Collector, then you already know I loved it! It’s no secret that I am a huge fan of Wendy Higgins. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: she just has a way of storytelling that never fails to completely captivate me, no matter the content. I don’t care what she writes, I will read it. Okay, it should always involve romance because she’s so good at writing a good love story. Oh, the feels!
This book was no exception to the above. I was captivated from page one and never looked back. The story felt a bit like The Bachelorette at times (a very tamed-down version). The narrator, Zae, after having her heart broken, goes around kissing a bunch of different boys, but she also hangs out with some of them, until finally settling on one to kiss forever. The point is not to fall for any of the guys, so it’s not like The Bachelorette in that sense…I just got a bit of that vibe off of the whole thing. It’s like she had all these guys that were interested in her to choose from – that’s the way it resembled The Bachelorette. Maybe that’s just me though?
Higgins knows how to write romance and really gives the reader those feels. The same was true in this book. My favourite part was when a certain love interest said he wanted to burn Zae’s kiss list. I’m not allowed to share any quotes, but trust me – I melted at that part. The whole scene was just unexpected and hot.
I wish the ending would have given us a bit more, though. I would have liked to have seen them together as a couple. Even just one more chapter would have sufficed I think. I want more of Zae and *** (sorry – I refuse to ruin it for you)!
Best Aspect: Captivity
Worst Aspect: Nothing that I would consider calling “worst”
