Top Ten Words/Topics That Will Make You NOT Pick up a Book

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke
and the Bookish every Tuesday.  Every week it’s a different
topic and those of us who decide to join in share our top
ten for the week’s topic!

This week’s topic is Top Ten Words/Topics That Will Make You NOT Pick up a Book.

This one is hard for me, because I’m so open to different genres and types of books.  Sure, I have my favourites (so top ten words/topics that will make me pick up a book would have been much easier!), but there’s not much that scares me away.  I will give pretty much anything a try.  But, I guess I have some reservations when first glancing at a book, so here are the words that (will most likely, but not necessarily) deter me from reading a book:

  1. A lot of those words turn me off of books too. And maybe it’s dumb, but if a guy/girl is described as “hot” in a book blurb, that’s usually a deterrent for me too. It might not always hold true, but I feel like the book’s going to be more focused on make-out sessions and all that jazz than a solid plot when the word “hot” is used as an adjective.

  2. I don’t do much of the self help, so I guess that’s why I don’t really like it. I NEVER have the time or patience for complex (boring) stuff like politics. I’m a wimp, so no horror for me too, and yeah, incest? Erotica? Uhm no. So I agree with this list! 😀

  3. It’s good to see someone else list incest as one of their turn-offs. I read a book last year that sprang a possibly incestuous relationship between the two leads on me midway through, with no prior warning. It’s enough to kill a girl! 🙂 LOL Great list though, I agree with a lot of them. I do read biography though – as long as it reads like a novel. Which is why memoirs are the better subsect of that group most of the time. Politics = never.
